America - Day 10
As I walked around Chicago Union station this afternoon, looking for the street exit I wanted, I approached several strangers, both men - starting with 'excuse me can you....' The first man held his hand up towards my face. The second turned away as I approached. I realised that they thought I was going to ask them for money - I have a rucsac on, look slightly dishevelled and have a beard - could be homeless. So, I simply changed my tack and I smiled as I walked towards an old lady who was sat with her bags on a bench 'is that the exit to Jackson St please ?' this time I was ok and we even had a short conversation and she, together with someone else close by, guided me to where I needed to be. With the hand in my face and the turning away I experienced the prejudice which some folks get every day - but I also experienced help and compassion from others.
The next time someone comes up to me and begins to ask for something.......I'm going to listen beyond the first few words.
